Police arrest two alleged ETA members

07/26/2008

Police arrested two members of the armed group ETA in the Cote d'Or region in eastern central France. They were ETA military wing leader Asier Eceiza and Olga Comes, a member of Bizkaia cell.

The armed Basque group ETA planned to kidnap and murder a Socialist politician, Spanish media reported on Friday, citing the police interrogation of an ETA suspect arrested this week.

The planned murder of Socialist Basque councilor Benjamin Atutxa is the latest disclosure from the investigation into one of ETA's most active cells (Bizkaia cell), which was dismantled on Tuesday with the arrest of nine suspected members.

The cell, blamed for a string of bomb attacks and killing a civil guard, had also planned to assassinate the top anti-terrorism judge Fernando Grande-Marlaska, court sources told Reuters on Thursday.

The French Interior Ministry said on Friday French police had arrested two members of the armed group ETA in the Cote d'Or region in eastern central France. The two arrested were ETA military wing leader Asier Eceiza and Olga Comes, a member of Bizkaia cell.
