15 minutes of silence were held in several places of the Basque Country in memory of Juan Manuel Piñuel, killed Wednesday by the armed Basque group ETA.

Thousands of people gathered on Thursday afternoon in several places of the Basque Country to condemn Wednesday’s attack at Spanish police barracks in the Basque town of Legutio. The police officer Juan Manuel Piñuel was killed and other four were injured in the attack. The gatherings were held in front of Basque institutions.

In the gathering in front of Basque Parliament, attended by Basque premier Juan José Ibarretxe and Spain’s government vice president María Teresa Fernández de la Vega among others, a tribute was held in the policeman’s honor.

This act took place after the state funeral officiated at Vitoria-Gasteiz cathedral, where a floral offering was made for Piñuel.

A high-ranking Basque police officer and a high-ranking Spanish policeman put a wreath and a picture of the dead policeman at the sculpture dedicated to the victims of terrorism.

Apart from the leaders of the Basque parties, the ceremony was also attended by Piñuel’s widow, Spain’s Interior Minister Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, Defense Minister Carme Chacón and some members of the Spanish Socialist party and the Popular Party.
