Spanish Prime Minister José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero condemned at the Congress of Deputies the “coward, miserable and criminal attack” perpetrated on Wednesday by the armed Basque group ETA in the Basque province of Alava. He also pointed out that those who fight against terrorism will be “stronger” if politicians “are united” and ETA will be “much weaker” and its end “nearer”.
In his first statements about the attack, which killed the Spanish policeman Juan Manuel Piñuel, Zapatero said that “the weight of Law, Justice and Constitutional State will force those who have committed this criminal barbarity to give explanations”.
Spain’s Prime Minister expressed his “gratitude” to the parties and social forces that this morning showed their opposition to the armed group and he said we should remain together to “honor the memory of those who defend us and of those who died for our freedom”.
