Basque mountaineer Juanito Oiarzabal summited on Saturday Mount Makalu, 8,463 meters, and set a new world record for the highest number of summit ascents toelight-thousander mountains.
It was Oiarzabal's twenty-second eight-thousander, breaking his own previous record of twenty-one ascents.
The Basque mountaineer is the sixth man to reach the 14 eight-thousanders, the fourteen mountains on Earth more than 8,000 meters above sea level, and the fourth in reaching them without artificial oxygen.
