Several policemen injured and two arrested in Errenteria

Basque police have arrested two people today in Errenteria (Gipuzkoa). Besides, one of them has shot twice into the air as being surrounded by around 50 people, which has become an ambush, Basque police have informed. As they have informed through a press note, incidents have started when some Basque policemen were about to identify several people who were carrying signs of the illegalized organization Segi. The association in favor of Basque prisoners, Askatasuna, however, states that Basque government "lies" with its version.

Incidents have started at around 12:00, near Euskotren train station in the neighborhood of Gaztaño in Errenteria (Gipuzkoa) when some Basque policemen were about to identify several people who were carrying signs of the illegalized organization Segi. Then, the police officers were surrounded by around 40 or 50 people, which has become an ambush, according to the Interior Department.

In this situation, one of the Basque policemen has shot into the air, according to the Autonomic police. These sources have also assured that police have charged, with the following balance: a 62-year-old man arrested and taken to an assistance center as he was complaining about shoulder pain and several injured Besides, nine policemen have been injured, but there has not been any information about their actual situation.

Askatasuna’s version

The association in favor of Basque prisoners Askatasuna has given a totally different version of the facts occurred in Errenteria. Askatasuna thinks Basque Interior Department "lies". It has explained that the intention of the people there was to hold a press conference because of the detentions which took place yesterday and that when Basque police have tried to stop it, "they have hit citizens, have shot into the air and have arrested one person (who is in hospital). They have arrested another person after that".

The person who has been taken to hospital in Donostia is Jose Luis Gurrutxaga. According to Askatasuna, he is kept under observation after “Basque police beat him".

The other arrested is Iñaki García Alkorta and he is at the Basque police station in Errenteria.
