FOLLOWING A HIGH COURT ORDER

Spanish police arrest ten people over street violence

04/18/2008

The arrests were made overnight in the Basque towns of Errenteria, Oiartzun and Arrasate. The arrested were believed responsible for most of the street violence on electrical substations and EuskoTren installations.

Spanish officials say they have arrested 10 people on suspicion of engaging in street violence in support of the armed Basque group ETA.

The Interior Ministry says the 10 are accused of throwing Molotov cocktails at a police station, setting fires and carrying out other attacks in the Basque region since 2005.

The arrests were made overnight in the Basque towns of Errenteria, Oiartzun and Arrasate following an order of the Spanish High Court judge Fernando Grande-Marlaska.

The ministry says in a statement issued Friday that the suspects range in age from 20 to 27.

Gangs of young people who allegedly back the armed Basque group ETA, carry out vandalism sprees regularly by firebombing official buildings, banks and transport facilities. The attacks are known by their name in the Basque language, ``kale borroka,'' or street fighting.
