Bomb outside PSOE office in Bilbao hurts 7 Basque policemen

04/17/2008

The bomb exploded at 6 a.m. local time, half an hour after an anonymous caller warned claiming the attack for the armed Basque group ETA. The blast caused several material damages.

Seven police officers were injured in a bomb explosion Thursday in the northern Basque city of Bilbao following a warning call in the name of the armed group ETA, a police spokesman said.

The bomb exploded at 6 a.m. (0400 GMT) in the doorway of offices of the governing Socialist party in La Peña district. A call in ETA's name was made to a regional traffic department a half-hour earlier saying where and when the blast would occur, the spokesman said.

A police patrol in the area had already spotted a suspicious package outside the building around 5 a.m. (0300 GMT) and began evacuating residents from the area and cordoning off the zone.

The spokesman said the officers were still close to the building when the bomb went off. Seven were treated for light injuries but none had to be
admitted to a city hospital. The officer was speaking on condition of anonymity in keeping with police regulations.

The blast caused several material damages.
