OBITUARY

Basque writer Elías Amezaga dies

Playwright Elías Amézaga Urlezaga died this morning at his home in the Basque town of Getxo at the age of 87, after a lengthy illness, as his close family and friends have informed.

He was born in Bilbao, in 1921, and wrote over sixty books. He was a recognized dramatist and essayist and dedicated great part of his life on the study of Basque writers. He graduated in Law at the University of Oviedo.

He was a literary contributor in his years as a student in Hierro de Bilbao and La Voz de Asturias de Oviedo, and after in Deia, La Gaceta del Norte, El Diario Vasco, La Hoja del Lunes de Bilbao, El Correo, Diario 16, Egin, Muga, La Voz de Vizcaya, Boletín de la Institución Sancho el Sabio, Arbola, Pérgola, Letras de Deusto, Historia Contemporánea, Kultura, El Mundo del País Vasco and El Periódico de Álava.

He spent most part of his life retired in his house in the Basque town of Getxo, or covering files, libraries and newspapers and periodical libraries (in Madrid, Paris, Amsterdam, Coimbra, Salamanca, Simancas), searching for information for his studies.
