MARCH IN ARRASATE

Thousands of people march to condemn the attack

03/10/2008

Isaias Carrasco’s widow and daughters carried the banner of the march, in which it was written “For the freedom, no ETA”. Together with them, several local representatives also took part in the rally.

Isaias Carrasco’s widow and daughters, thousands of people, and institutional representatives of all democratic parties rallied through the main streets of Arrasate/Mondragón to condemn last Friday’s attack, in which the former socialist city councilor Isaias Carrasco was shot to death by the Basque armed group ETA.

Carrasco’s widow, Marian Romero, and his two daughters carried the banner of the march, in which it was written the following: “For the freedom, no ETA”. Representatives of all local parties, with the exception of the Basque outlawed leftist party ANV, rallied together with them.

Several institutional representatives also took part in the march: the Basque premier Juan José Ibarretxe, the president of the Senate, Javier Rojo, the leader of Basque socialists Patxi Lopez, the president of the Popular Party in the Basque Country María San Gil and the presidents of the Basque nationalist parties PNV and EA, among others.

The march, led by Isaias Carrasco’s family and local representatives, went through the maim streets of the Basque town previously mentioned, and it stopped in the place where the socialist city councilor was shot dead. There, they stood a minute of silence in memory of the last victim of ETA.

Rallies in the Basque Country

On the other hand, many rallies to condemn the attack took place in other parts of the Basque Country. Carrasco’s workmates rallied in front of Arrasate city hall.

About hundred people gathered in front of Bilbao city hall. Marches also took place in the province of Navarre.

Rallies in Spain

Many rallies took place throughout Spain. Spain’s vice-president, Maria Teresa Fernández de la Vega, led the one in Valencia.

Spain’s Prince and Princess also took part in a quiet protest in the Spanish town of Barcelona.
