Basques are mourning the death of a Isaías Carrasco, a former Socialist councilor shot death on Friday.

A wake is being held for 42-year-old Isaias Carrasco in Mondragon, the industrial town where he was shot Friday in his car as he prepared to go to his job as a clerk in a highway toll booth.

The corpse of the former socialist town councilor will lie in the funeral chapel in the town hall until the funeral takes place at 17:00 in the San Juan Bautista Church.

A protest rally is also planned in Arrasate-Mondragon at 19:00.

Carrasco was killed at about 1:30 pm (1230 GMT) in the Basque town of Arrasate, as the politician left the home he shared with his wife and children.

Witnesses say the assassin - wearing a false beard - stepped out and fired five shots at the 42-year-old Basque politician, then sped off in a grey car.

Authorities say the Socialist politician was hit by at least three of the bullets, including in the head and chest.

There was no claim of responsibility, but the government was quick to blame the armed Basque group ETA.
