Aritz Aranburu (EUK), 2007 ASP European Pro Surf Tour Champion and 2008 ASP World Tour newcomer, lost to Kai Otton (AUS) and Travis Logie (ZAF) in Heat 12. Finishing 3rd, Aranburu will join fellow European surfers Flores, Pires and Bourez in Round 2.

"I was positive and confident before my first heat of the year", Aranburu said. "I chose waves I shouldn’t have and the others got the better ones, but I still feel good and hope to be luckier with the waves".

Aranburu, who has been surfing excellent waves since he got here, was not at ease in the tricky conditions today. "We have had very good waves in the past few days and the sudden change of conditions made it even more difficult".
