Grande-Marlaska grants isolated imprisonment for Igor Portu

01/11/2008

The judge will interrogate Mattin Sarasola today, arrested together with Portu on Sunday in Arrasate/Mondragon. The detention turned doubtful after the apparition of a witness who assures that the arrest was "fair".

National high Court Judge Fernando Grande-Marlaska will make Mattin Sarasola testify, who was arrested on Sunday in Arrasate/Mongragón together with Igor Portu and accused of being ETA member.

The isolation period applied for both of them finishes today.

Yesterday, National High Court’s Judge interrogated Igor Portu at Donostia Hospital, where he is still hospitalized 15 hours after the arrest.

Portu denied answering the Judge and the Public Prosecutor’s questions. Soon after, the Judge ordered unconditional imprisonment for Portu, so that he will taken to prison as soon as he leaves hospital where he is at the moment.

Furthermore, he ordered to extend the isolation period to five more days.

Gara newspaper states today that the arrested is still in hospital and he has not been taken to another floor as it was said yesterday.

A witness denies the official version

On the other hand, it was known yesterday that the witness who saw the arrest of the two alleged Basque armed group ETA members on Sunday testified and his testimony contradicted the version supported by Spanish government.

According to his declaration, the arrest was “fair” and says the youngsters did not offer any resistance.
