Luis Cuadrado, who is better known as "El kaliman" was participating in the annual bull festival north of Colombia when he was gored several times by a bull.

A Colombian bullfighter was hospitalised in Sincelejo on Monday, after a bull stabbed him in the face, neck, legs and abdomen during festivities in Sucre province, northern Colombia.

Luis Cuadrado, who is better known as "El kaliman" was participating in the annual bull festival north of Colombia when he was gored several times by a bull.

Colombian television captured the dramatic moments as the bull used its horns to throw Cuadrado's body into the air several times. Caudrado, who says he has been gored by bulls 55 times in the last four years, was recovering in hospital on Monday.

Each January, hundreds of people risk their lives in the ring with 1,000-pound (454 kilogramme) bulls. An average of 20 participants die each year in these "corralejas," which have been held annually for more than 150 years in towns across Colombia's northern plains.

The only certain survivors in the arena are the bulls themselves because in Colombia, unlike in traditional bullfights in Spain, it is forbidden to kill the animals.
