ETA bomb hits Socialist Party building

A bomb exploded in a Socialist Party building in the Basque town of Balmaseda on Monday, after a warning by the armed Basque group ETA, local media said.

The explosion, causing no casualties, occurred at 9:08 p.m. local time (2008 GMT) in the party building in Balmaceda, 30 km from Basque city of Bilbao.

A self-claimed ETA member called at 8:15 p.m., saying that a bomb could go off at the site at around 9:00 p.m. The warning triggered a police operation to cordon off and evacuate the area. Damage inflicted by the explosion is still being assessed, police said.
