Councilor in Elvis Flares will propose Red Light District in Reus

09/13/2007

His platform includes plans to paint the town hall pink, plant marijuana in the parks and give the town police global positioning systems to find people who might need a light while rolling a joint.

He can not stop moving and there is plenty of life in him yet. Ariel Santamaria, a former postman, stood for CORI, a small independent party, dressed in full Elvis regalia complete with sideburns and won enough votes last weekend to take a council seat in Reus, a town of 100,000 people near Barcelona.

His platform included plans to paint the town hall pink, plant marijuana in the parks and give the town police global positioning systems to find people who might need a light while rolling a joint and he wants to turn the square into a nudist pool.

In an interview for the Spanish news web site 20minutos.es, Santamaria talks about his experience as a politician.

He claims that Elvis Presley was much more than just his music, a way of life, he says.

"We make a virtue of poverty," Santamaria says as all his party spent for the May election were 1,000 euros on posters and t-shirts.

Among his proposals was a "follodromo", a place where people can go to have sex. There was a vote at the Town Council but it was rejected by the rest of parties. He says he already knew his proposal would be rejected but it was a good chance so that citizens could see how politicians think. However, he will not despair and announces other proposals such as a Red Light District or a municipal red-light bar.

It is not strange that he says that the rest of politicians in the Reus Town Council look at him as if he was a kid of weirdo.
