Web surfers launch Flickr album to fight against censorship

08/28/2007

Users of this web site in countries such as Germany, Singapore, China or South Korea can not access many of the photos after these countries had labeled them as not suitable.

The Internet, presumably the most democratic media in the world, is not sometimes so democratic as everybody thinks. Censorship is a constant threat in many countries. Most of the times, it is governments who put pressure on the Internet important firms.

Some web surfers have decided to create a Flickr photo album to protest against censorship at Flickr and on the Web. Users of this web site in countries such as Germany, Singapore, China or South Korea can not access many of the photos after these countries had labeled them as not suitable.

The new photo album, Against Censorship at Flickr, gathers photos of all the flickr users who want to protest against censorship in this photo service.

Censorship in Chinese Flickr happened after some users uploaded photos of the killing of students in Tiananmen in June 1989. However, it is not confirmed the relationship between the censorship and the photos.

Chinese web surfers decided to fight the censorship and distributed on the Internet some web explorer patches to avoid the Flick censorship.
