NEW YORK, NEW YORK

That who has arms, ends up firing

08/16/2007

By Sarai Campo. A few days ago we were talking about the easy way to buy weapons in the U.S., now we will comment on the consequences of living side-by-side with arms.

New York subway

Last Sunday an argument between two groups of adolescents in the New York subway unleashed a shoot-out, leaving one of the young boys dead and three injured. Fateful Sunday in New York.

According to police versions, as one of the boys saw the argument was heating up, he pulled out his pistol and shot at the four victims in front of other passengers that had nothing to do with the argument.

The events took place in the train 5 of the Bronx at 2:30am as the young boys were heading back home from a picnic. As Tornette Story, mother of one of the victims, confirmed, the boys had already being arguing at the picnic, and one of the groups followed the other to the subway.

According to the official version, one of the boys died at once as he was shot in the chest and the murderer got off the subway at the next station. Yesterday the mother of the victim denounced publicly that no arrests had been carried out yet.

On the following day of the arrest, the relatives of the victim went to the site of the events to demand quick and effective police action tearfully speaking for the media.

No doubt, a most tragic way to put an end to a picnic between friends. But that's the thing, anybody can have a weapon.

When the other day we talked about how easy it is to have a gun and access a shop to buy a Magnum 9 mm, it sounded quite cold or even not very realistic, but this kind of tragic event makes us see reality as such. Around 15 days ago I visited the neighbouring State of New Jersey, where another young person shot three people dead in the middle of the street. The slaughter of Virginia Tech still in mind, it's difficult to believe how come no more guns fire at completely harmless targets.

The way slaughters startle citizens is curious. Chatting with Brooklyn resident about last Sunday's shoot-out they looked sad, worried, moved, as if caught by surprise.

And of course. A question is unavoidable: don't they know how dangerous it is that anybody older than 16 who fills in some tests can have a weapon? It's something really complicated.

At the Starbucks I've told you about so much, there is a nice guy by me filling in the questionnaires for a "personal hand gun." This is really not for bragging. It's as real as my attempt to see it from closer; as the young man, around 30, realised so, he smiled.

Now I only think of finishing these lines as soon as possible to collect my computer, cables, headphones and go home. The issue doesn't admit any jokes.

As you can see, everything is not so marvellous in the Great Apple. From the most sinister side of the city, once again this is New York.
