Art in New York

ARTIUM, Basque contemporary art centre, and the Cervantes Institute offer the tourist the opportunity to know “the objectives of men and women”. An exhibition integrated by works chosen from the collection of the museum-centre of Vitoria, for the exhibition in the offices of the Institute in New York and Chicago between May and November 2007.

The exhibition has works of 12 authors such as Jorge Oteiza, Joan Miró, Eduardo Chillida, Salvador Dalí or Pablo Picasso, and present the different views this group of artists have done on the condition of being men or women, apart from showing the wealth and diversity of ARTIUM collection.

“By the way, men and women”, whose commissioner, Javier González de Durana, inaugurated the 7th of May in New York, and will stay until 1st September.

Later, it will travel to the head office of the Cervantes Institute in Chicago, where it will remain open from September 13 to November 9.

However, it is not the only exhibition that can be visited in New York. The Big apple is a paradise for art lovers. MOMA (Museum of Modern Art), the elder brother of the Guggenheim Bilbao, the Metropolitan Museum… There are several possibilities in New York.

All of them different and beautiful at the same time. MOMA is one of the most incredible and attractive buildings seen in long ago. If I had to choose a building in the city, I would chose, without any doubt, MOMA. The huge windows, from which you can see the beautiful patio, it’s inexplicable. The MOMA is not just a building in the middle of the city. It is a museum with continuous references to the foreign, to the things around… It is not one of those buildings that once you enter you forget the things outside.

It is known that New York is a city of great museums, buildings and important businessmen, what makes the Big Apple a place with a huge offer works of international artists.

Dalí, Miró, Picasso, or a Senegalese sculpture are mixed up with Greek and Egyptian art. There is no order. The works are exhibited, the tourist arrives, look up them and see them.

Imagine, you are a follower of Miró and you want to see the complete works exhibited in the Metropolitan Museum. So, the only way is to walk through the whole museum. Walk from room to room, and have a look at every room on modern art, because it is arranged neither by authors, nor by chronology. The order does not exist in those rooms.

Art experts are the ones entrusted on arranging (or disarranging in some cases) the museums, and they are who can give the best explanation. I only know that the museums where neither arranged by artistic moments, by chronology, by artists, nor by styles.

Apart from that, it is marvellous. Here is everything, they have got all the artists. Once again, from the greatness to the chaos, this is New York.
