Canadian Police arrest suspected ETA member

06/20/2007

The detainee is suspected of carrying out a car bombing in Madrid in 2000, the first attack after the group had called off a cease-fire in 1999, which killed Colonel Pedro Antonio Blanco, the Interior Ministry said.

Canadian Police have arrested a suspected member of the armed Basque group ETA, Spanish authorities said Wednesday.

Ivan Apaolaza Sancho, 35, is suspected of carrying out a car bombing in Madrid in 2000, the first attack after the group had called off a 18-month cease-fire in 1999, which killed Colonel Pedro Antonio Blanco, the Interior Ministry said in a statement.

Apaolaza was held in Quebec, where he was living illegally under false documents, the statement added. He has been wanted in Spain since 2002 when the National Court issued an arrest warrant for him for terrorism.

It was the second arrest of an ETA suspect in Canada this month. Last week Victor Tejedor Bilbao, 50, was detained in Vancouver, where he had been living since the late 1990s. He was picked up by Canadian authorities on June 1 and held on charges of being in the country illegally. He is wanted for the attempted murder of a newspaper executive in 1981.
