This is the translation by eitb24.com of the speech by Basque Government spokeswoman Miren Azkarate:
"ETA announced early morning it called of the truce and moves back to the past. A past of violence, blackmail, terror and threat.
"It can only be considered to be a macabre joke that ETA announces it puts an end to the ceasefire while five months ago, in December, it blew up a strong explosive in Madrid that killed Diego Armando Estacio and Carlos Alonso Palate.
"In the name of what and in the name of whom does ETA act?
"In the name of the Basque Country, of course not. Because this country has its history, its roots, its culture and its rights. We have confronted wars and dictatorships like Franco's, and Basques knew how to defend our rights democratically.
"In the name of the Right to Decide of Basque society, neither. The Right to Decide how we want our future to be is democratically defended in institutions and society.
"This Government has done so and will keep on defending the Right we have to decide pacifically and democratically how we want our future to be.
"At last, ETA's announcement is the answer to Leftwing Nationalism, as following the Madrid attack it demanded an indefinite and unconditional truce.
"Thus, ETA shows how much it minds what Basque society thinks. It's not only that it doesn't mind what the majority of citizens think, it doesn't mind any longer what Leftwing Nationalism itself thinks and defends, left politically snubbed.
"They are more alone than ever and the indignation and anger its statement caused in each and every one of citizens can only lead to the definitive end of violence and ETA's definitive disappearance."
