The spokeswoman for the Basque Government, Miren Azkarate, described ETA's announcement of the end of its cease-fire as a "macabre joke" after the band carried out an attack on Madrid airport that killed two people in December.

Furthermore, she interpreted it as "as an answer to leftwing nationalism," left "politically snubbed," after the movement asked for "an indefinite and unconditional truce." "ETA showed thus how much it cares, what it thinks about Basque society. It doesn't only ignore what the majority of citizens think, it doens't even mind any longer what leftwing nationalism itself thinks and defends, and left the movement politically snubbed," Azkarate said.

Azkarate read from an institutional statement that the armed band announced "it called off the truce to go back to violence, blackmail, terror and threat."

That is why she wondered "in the name of whom does ETA act?," and replied that "of course, not in the name of the Basque country or the right to decide of the Basque country" since the country defends itself "democratically in institutions and society."

As the Basque Government said, "ETA is more alone than ever, and the indignation and anger its statement caused in each and every one of citizens can only lead to the definitive end of violence and ETA's definitive disappearance."
