The French weekly L'Express unveiled in its digital edition that Kepa Mirena Suarez, aged 47, and Juan Carlos Iurrebaso, aged 52, arrested in late March for their alleged links to the armed band ETA, carried four telephone numbers when they were arrested. Two of them were Spanish and the other two French. At least one of them belonged to a close collaborator of the former French Interior minister, Nicolas Sarkozy, and member of the Ministry.
Tips to the information were reported in the weekly's Web site, as the printed edition is published every Thursday. The magazine assures that at the time the two men were arrested, they showed those numbers to French policemen and asked them to dial them urgently, convinced they would be released right away.
According to some sources, when they were arrested they identified themselves as members of ETA's "negotiating machine."
According to L'Express, the French Interior Ministry confirmed that a responsible post of the Spanish Interior Ministry led by Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba asked Paris to fit out an emergency telephone number for ETA emissaries while in the French territory. However, the lack of confidence of Customs Police blocked the tool.
Information about diplomats
Among the information confiscated in the arrest there were also names of Swiss and Norwegian diplomats that would be involved in the peace process. According to the weekly, "negotiations have been underway in Switzerland with the secret help of Paris." "France has been more involved than it has admitted up to this moment," it adds.
About the role of the detainees, the magazine affirms that experts suspect Iurrebaso was a likely 'man of the process' and Suarez Huarte would be a driver and bodyguard.
