INTERVIEW ON EUSKADI IRRATIA

McGuinnes: "DUP and Sinn Fein can work together"

03/26/2007

The Sinn Fein 'number two' and deputy PM of the new Northern Ireland Government noted that both parties will govern side by side because citizens requested so.

The leader of the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP), Ian Paisley, and Sinn Fein's, Gerry Adams, agreed to form a joint government for Northern Ireland from May 8 on.

Two historic foes sharing government. In fact, reverend Ian paisley and Gerry Adams sat down face to face, and looked serious in their joint appearence for the media, but they were able to reach an agreement.

The Sinn Fein 'number 2' and deputy prime minister of the new Northern Irish Government, Martin McGuinness, on the contrary, didn't hide his hopes in an interview for the public station Euskadi Irratia.

He knows the picture of the two leaders is historic, "a momentous day," and noted that it was possible because citizens wanted so: "The people who voted clearly decided that DUP and Sinn Fein can work together to build a better future for themselves and their children." Furthermore, McGuinnes thinks that "they can work together."

Anyway, he specified that the path was not easy: "Sinn Fein has worked very hard, many years to build the peace process. We had to deal with many difficult aspects of the situation, making it clear that the war was over."

He also noted the steps they followed. Thus, he cited IRA's disarmament and the recognition of Police and Justice a few weeks ago by the Sinn Fein: "We will be able to do that ... The only way to do that is work hard." "We have achieved overwhelming support," he added.
