NATIONAL COURT TRIAL

Basque prisoner De Juana denies his articles had threats

10/27/2006

Iñaki de Juana assured in the trial that is taking place in the National Court that the articles published in Gara in 2004 were "political criticism."

Basque prisoner Iñaki de Juana Chaos denied that the articles published in the daily Gara in 2004 threatened five prison mangers and the president of the National Court Javier Gómez Bermúdez. He assured they were "pure political criticism." "I don't understand where threats are," he affirmed.

Furthermore, the accused also rejected that he included the names of the prisons to define them as targets for ETA attacks.

Prosecutor Fernando Burgos asked him about his plans when he leaves prison, if he wants to reintegrate into the community or stay in ETA. De Juana answered: "My only aim is to collaborate with editorials and write books."

Ricardo Sainz de Ynestrillas, son of the Armed Forces Commander murdered by ETA in June 1986, shouted at De Juana: "Juan Ignacio, look at my face, look into my eyes, I'm Ynestrillas. Look into my eyes, because this will be the last thing you'll see." Afterwards, his brother denounced aloud: "Those people are raising their fists." Both were subdued by security agents and expelled from court.
