Authorities say counterterrorism police in central France have arrested two alleged members of the armed Basque group ETA.

Police say they are questioning a man and woman in the city of Saint-Etienne.

French police say the suspects had handguns and numerous false documents when they were arrested after dawn Tuesday while allegedly trying to steal a car in the village of Trelins.

It is not clear if the arrests were linked to a powerful car bombing in northern Spain that killed an army officer and wounded six other people, one of three attacks Monday that Officials attributed to ETA.
