Spanish officials say a small bomb believed to have been planted by the armed Basque group ETA has exploded on a southern Spanish beach in the resort town of Torremolinos, but caused no injuries.
Interior Minister Alfredo Perez Rubalcaba says police also found a pistol and some bomb-making material belonging to the group at a quarry overlooking Torremolinos. But he says authorities do not believe this meant ETA has managed to set up an active cell in the region.
Tuesday's low-power device went off shortly after midnight close to the Hotel Sol Aloha while hundreds of people were walking along the seafront.
There was no warning given before the blast and no group has claimed responsibility.
Mayor Pedro Fernandez Montes says: “It's a clear attempt at causing alarm.”
