Now, everybody tries to take political benefit of Ingrid Betancourt’s rescue; some have more reasons than others do. Colombian president Alvaro Uribe achieved great success. His French counterpart Nicolas Sarkozy also wanted to appear in the picture and it is true that he got involved very much in Ingrid Betancourt’s rescue, as his predecessor Jaques Chirac also did.
For France, Ingrid Betancourt’s kidnap has been a matter of national interest. Venezuela’s Chavez has offered himself as a mediator once again, in an attempt to make everybody forget that he once really relied on FARC. But the one who can take the greatest political benefit is Ingrid Betancourt herself. If she decides to restart her political career, she can be a really good candidate.
During the 90s decade she left the Senate slamming the door behind her and in 2002 she became presidential candidate, although her popularity went down.
It was at that moment when she was kidnapped and her political career was shattered when it was at the peak. For Uribe, Betancourt’s rescue is a double-edged sword: it can help him to remain in power, but it also can make him difficult to win election again if she restarts he political career.
