The lehendakari, Juan José Ibarretxe, announced a “new historical cycle”, without the obstacle of the Basque armed group ETA and the Spanish Government. From his point of view, “The Spanish executive cannot use the existence of the Basque armed group ETA as a political excuse to impede the Basque Country do things on their own way".
Ibarretxe, said that during the debate of this Friday in the Basque Parliament to propose an initiative to give the “democratic key” to the Basque Society in order to open a new “historical cycle” that will bring peace and political normalization to the Basque Country.
Ibarretxe began his speech with the plenary of general politics at 9:30 a.m.
At the beginning of his speech, the lehendakari said that Basque society has to “assume a main character role” in any normalization and pacification process.
He also said that at the end of his speech he will propose a “change in methodology” to “give the democratic key” to Basque society and “open a new historical cycle to bring peace and political normalization” to the Basque Country.
Ibarretxe talked about the peace process that the Basque armed group ETA finished, and after pointing out that the only “guilty” of the failure was ETA, he said that “although the mistakes, it worth the money”.
More than 600 journalists and invited people
The plenary is being followed with great expectation due to the political initiatives the lehendakari can announce around the referendum.
