07/27/2007

By Sarai Campo. It's curious how being downtown the city, one can be as alone and calm as in a Tibetan town.

A hustling city like New York stresses the walker, tires the worker and exhausts the tourist. Walk through Times Square, look at the luxurious shop windows of the Fifth Avenue, and feel like an artist in Broadway; these are some of the unrepeatable experiences out of New York, but finding a bench in the shade is a great prize for tourists.

The never-ending sounds of the city are unavoidable, wherever you go the city sounds strongly. People go to and fro, running with the coffee in one hand and the wallet in the other; tourists holding maps can be recognised as they look upwards at the immense skyscrapers, and the cars, buses and taxis drive along the infinite city.

New York shouts for a rest. Shouts for a bench in the shade and a coffee sitting pleasantly on the grass. But the curious thing is that everything exists in the Big Apple. In the middle of the middle, there, near all those looking for a rest, is Central Park. With its lakes, grass, little squirrels climbing up the trees… it looks like a novel, but it is real.

And all this, so near the sound, near the going and coming of brokers, nervous because the dollar continues falling, near businessmen running to and fro…

Central Park is a world. A world directed by calmness, music and sport. Thousands of people run from one side to the other of the city in a hurry, while others run through Central Park trying to relax. The great park is a continuous marathon. People of all ages put on their trainers and shorts and go jogging.

Music is another good thing at the Park. It's normal to enjoy yourself with fantastic groups of young black boys wearing wide shirts, offering people a great musical show; string quartets with a mixture of heavy music… Central Park is the ideal place to run away from the stress of the city and breathe new air without leaving the city.

It's curious that without leaving the city centre, people can enjoy the tranquillity of a Buddhist temple.

Seeing a nightfall at Jacqueline Kenedy Lake in Central Park is a must.

Once again, this is New York.
