Nationalists win in Bilbao; socialists in San Sebastian, Vitoria

In the Basque Autonomous Region, citizens elected 2,609 town councillors and 153 county councillors, and in Navarre local councillors, mayors and members of the parliament as well as its president.

More than 2,200,000 Basques and Navarrans were eligible to vote May 27. At stake on Sunday were town halls, regional councils of the Basque Autonomous Region and the Navarre regional president.

In the Basque Autonomous Region, where there was an abstention of the 39 percent, citizens elected 2,609 town councillors and 153 county councillors, including the Deputies of Araba, Gipuzkoa and Bizkaia. In Navarre, at stake were the local councillors, mayors and members of the Navarre parliament as well as the Navarran president.

Results in Basque capitals

With 100 percent of ballots counted, in Bilbao the Basque Nationalist Party PNV won the highest percentage of votes, 41.8 and 13 seats, followed by conservative PP with a 22.44 and 8 seats, and socialist PSE with 22.08 percent and 7 seats.

In Vitoria-Gasteiz socialists (31.36 percent and 9 seats) narrowly overcame the results of conservatives (29.74 percent and 9 seats), who have been running the Basque capital for a long time. The third force was PNV with a 21.89 percent of votes and 6 seats.

In Donostia-San Sebastian socialists retained the mayor's office with a 37.43 percent of ballots and 11 seats, followed by conservatives with a 21.38 percent and 6 seats, and PNV with a 17.20 percent and 5 seats.

In Pamplona/Iruña conservative UPN (Union of Navarran People) won the mayor's office with a 42.86 of votes and 13 seats, followed by the nationalist coalition Nafarroa Bai a 26.26 percent and 8 seats, and socialist PSN with a 15.23 and 4 seats.

Regional councils

The main force in Alava was PP with a 26.61 percent and 15 seats, followed by PSE with a 26.69 and 14 seats, PNV with 25.55 and 14 seats, and ANV with an 8.66 and 4 seats.

In Bizkaia PNV gathered most ballots a 39.99 and 23 seats, followed by PSE with a 24.82 and 14 seats, and PP with a 16.38 and 8 seats; and in Gipuzkoa PSE with a 29.06 percent and 16 seats, PNV with a 27.14 and 16 seats and EA with a 12.92 percent and 7 seats.

In Navarre's Parliament UPN won a 42.30 percent of votes and 22 seats, Nafarroa Bai won a 23.50 and 12 seats, and PSN with 22.40 and 12 seats.
