Jose Luis Garza, one of the fattest men in the world, dies

10/08/2008

Garza followed in the footsteps of the world's fattest man, Manuel Uribe, by taking his weight problem public and going on television to ask for help. He was pronounced dead Tuesday of heart failure.

A 990-pound (450-kilogram), bedridden Mexican man who begged publicly for help with his weight problem has died.

Emergency officials had to knock down Jose Luis Garza's bedroom wall and load him onto the back of a friend's pickup truck as he fought for his life. Despite the effort, he was pronounced dead Tuesday of heart failure upon his arrival at a hospital.

The 47-year-old Garza followed in the footsteps of the world's fattest man, Manuel Uribe, by taking his weight problem public and going on television to ask for help.

About 150 friends and family waited for more than four hours at a cemetery in the Monterrey suburb of Guadalupe while carpenters built a special coffin for Garza's burial.
