About a hundred families including more than 150 dancers flocked to the Basque Center in downtown Boise on Wednesday to register for the Boiseko Gazteak 2008-09 season.
Boiseko Gazteak, a Basque dance group for boys and girls between 4 to 14 years, will continue to be a perfect example of what makes of Boise a unique case in the world for keeping the Basque heritage and traditions.
Talking to eitb24 in a crowded Basque Center, Jennifer Warren, who is replacing Linda Barinaga as the leader of Boiseko Gazteak, said she was nervous but also excited to be able to carry on the tradition.
For this year, Jennifer said he hopes the number of families and dancers participating in Boiseko Gazteak maintains and keeps expanding for the 2010, year in which a new Jaialdi festival will be held in Boise. She also said she hopes the absence of Linda Barinaga as the leader of the dance group does not cause a reduction on the number of families.
Linda Barinaga, who has overseen the Basque-American dance group for the past 11 years, announced the leading teachers for the group this season.
Kim Bearden and Tere Achabal will be the leaders of the Nagusiak (11-14 years), Gina Urquidi the leader of the Txulitoak (6-7 years), Melissa Wolfe and Carmen Goicoechea the leaders of the Azkarrak (8-10 years) and Lisa Achabal-Morten will be leading the youngest ones, Txikutxuak.
Thirty-five teachers and musicians will guide the kids along, including some former students of this program.
Parents and family members will also be of great value to the program as they contribute their time towards the many annual projects both of the group and of the Basque Center. They help with monthly dinners; the Winter Show and the Spring Show; Kids’ Party; serve on the calling tree that notifies everyone in the group of new upcoming events; print copies of handouts; work on the Bazaar or Mortzillak dinner; distributing costumes when needed and much more.
