‘Lehendakari’ – Basque president Juan Jose Ibarretxe said that “popular consultation will be celebrated in spite of the adversities” set by the Spanish Socialist Party and Conservative Popular Party through the Constitutional Court. He also said that “sooner or later, the right to vote will be useful to solve the Basque conflict.“

Ibarretxe insisted on the fact that “Spain is violating the European Convention on Human Rights”, so the Basque Government will raise its voice with the aim of reconstructing political rights. He also said that “if a simple consultation involves a risk for the Spanish region, Spain is must be actually weak.”

Constitutional Court’s decision means “a direct attack” to the self-government for Ibarretxe and he proposes a “quiet and pacific answer that is also solid and forceful." ETA is the main obstacle and the ‘lehendakari’ also said that most Basque people “want to put and end to the course that the terrorism is”.

Juan Jose Ibarretxe thinks the Basque Country can endure the crisis better than other neighboring countries. Anyway, he talked about some measures to improve the economical situation in the Basque Country such as a 500 million euro investment that includes supporting actions to promote commercial development –national and international-, technology, communications and business. 11 “strategic economical projects” were announced.
